Center for New Liberalism Endorses Pink Tariffs Study Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Brittany Pettersen and Representative Lizzie Fletcher reintroduced their Pink Tariffs Study Act, a bill that would require the U.S. Department of Treasury to study whether the U.S. tariff system contains gender bias and regressivity.
The Center for New Liberalism is releasing the following statement from CNL Director Colin Mortimer in support of the bill:
"At the Center for New Liberalism, we believe in modernizing our economic policies to promote innovation, competition, affordability, and fairness, and we are proud to endorse Rep. Pettersen's and Rep. Fletcher's Pink Tariffs Study Act."
"Tariffs should be used sparingly and should not arbitrarily increase costs for consumers, especially in ways that disproportionately impact women. In the 21st century, our economy must have a trade policy that is transparent, data-driven, and free of unnecessary barriers—not one that raises costs across the board, as we’ve seen with Trump’s extreme tariff agenda.
“This bill will take an important first step toward identifying and addressing the gender-based disparities in our tariff system and help bring our tariff system into the modern era."
