Local governments love economic development. Whether it’s a new factory, commercial center, or stadium, the prospect of new jobs, tax revenues, and spillover effects are often too much to pass up. At minimum they make for good press and talking points.

Or do they? Ample are the examples of economic development projects that turn into expensive boondoggles. Worse, local politicians and civil servants debase themselves by throwing millions – if not billions – in subsidies in exchange for the potential of a future corporate benefactor who ends up going elsewhere anyway.

On October 26th, the LA New Liberals are pleased to host John Mozena, President of the Center for Economic Accountability (CEA). Join us at 7 p.m. for a Zoom-based conversation about how economic development schemes and subsidies fail, and how municipalities can work to create better environments for better and stronger economic growth and shared prosperity.

We will be meeting with Laura Duffy (@Laura_k_Duffy), newly elected to the Center for New Liberalism Steering Committee. Laura will be discussing her vision as a Steering Committee member, her goals for the Center for New Liberalism and its chapters, and how we can work with her and the rest of the Committee to expand the reach and impact of the New Liberal movement.

Established in 2021, the Center for New Liberalism’s Steering Committee aims to represent the Center for New Liberalism’s chapters and members in CNL’s strategic planning, provide a voice and forum for the direction of organization-wide initiatives, and advise on our mission to promote liberal ideas in the United States and worldwide.

The Steering Committee acts as a liaison between the national CNL organization and its chapters and membership and provides guidance and recommendations for our ongoing projects and initiatives. You can learn more about the steering committee here.

The LA New Liberals are a group of liberals dedicated to more housing, transportation, and immigration in Los Angeles.

The high cost of rent has made it difficult for ordinary Angelenos to afford to live in our great city. As newcomers and locals fight over a dwindling supply of homes, homelessness has skyrocketed and tents have cropped up on every corner.

The good news is that a new coalition of pro-housing advocates have cropped up in the past decade. Connected by the internet and united against the high cost of rent, the YIMBY movement has passed a number of important statewide bills in recent years. Now it's time to focus on LA's specific housing problems.

The LA New Liberals will be hosting several pro-housing city council candidates in order to discuss the difficulties of organizing around housing in LA, as well as opportunities for advocates to get involved.

Chelsea Byers is running for West Hollywood's City Council. She is a social impact strategist and community organizer with 17 years of experience leading programs and overseeing operations with nonprofits, grassroots and community organizations

Sarah Kate Levy ran in 2020 for City Council District 4 on a platform of housing, transit and trees. She now works as a fundraiser and communications consultant for political campaigns across California.

As we get closer to Election Day on November 8, the race between Rick Caruso and Karen Bass for Mayor of Los Angeles is getting tighter. The LA New Liberals are going to watch the next debate and discuss our favorite choice for Mayor.

Our debate watch party will be at All Seasons Brewing. Food will be provided, but drinks will not. Bring some friends and come join our community!

Come join the LA New Liberals for the opening of the new K Line!

The LA New Liberals are a group of liberals dedicated to more housing, transportation, and immigration in Los Angeles.

The new K metro line is opening this Friday, and the LA New Liberals are going to ride it!

While it was first conceived in 1967, the K Line was made possible by the passage of Measure R in 2008, which levied a half-cent sales tax per dollar. In 2014, it broke ground, and after nearly a decade of construction is finally opening.

Rides on Metro lines and Metro bikes are free this week. The line goes south down to LAX, where it is expected to connect to their new transit system by 2024.

We'll be meeting at noon at the Expo/Crenshaw line. Bring any of your friends who might be interested in the future of the city!
