Twin Cities New Liberals and Center for New Liberalism Demand End to Operation Metro Surge after Deaths in Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Today, the Twin Cities New Liberals and the Center for New Liberalism are issuing the following joint statement regarding the deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti:
“The unjustified deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti are an affront to the values of a free and liberal society that have left us horrified, angry, and heartbroken for the city of Minneapolis and our country. We want to offer our condolences to the families of Renee and Alex.
“Operation Metro Surge was never about public safety, ending fraud, or even immigration enforcement. It has always been an illiberal attempt to intimidate communities through a show of force, and it should end immediately. Minnesota’s state and local authorities must be allowed to conduct an unhindered investigation into Good and Pretti’s deaths. Should the facts support charges, the federal agents responsible should be prosecuted and brought to justice.
“We are also concerned by senior administration officials who have slandered Good and Pretti, as well as other protestors, as ‘assassins’ and ‘terrorists’ to avoid accountability. It’s chilling rhetoric that makes clear the administration views the individual rights and liberties of its citizens as secondary to its own agenda.
“The policies that enabled these tragedies are a direct result of the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ that supercharged ICE and Border Patrol with billions in unprecedented funding and thousands of unqualified hires. While we applaud the Democrats who unanimously stood against OBBBA, we believe it must become one of their top priorities in 2026 and 2028 to repeal this wasteful funding surge.
“Immigration is a net positive for every community, including Minneapolis, and it can be managed effectively without the tactics of fear and the deployment of untrained and unaccountable federal agents in our streets. For Renee, for Alex, and for everyone in Minneapolis and the rest of the country, we will continue fighting for a return to the liberal values that this nation was founded on.”
