Center for New Liberalism Statement on Supreme Court Tariff Ruling
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Center for New Liberalism welcomes today’s decision from the Supreme Court, ruling that President Trump’s tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act are illegal. Today’s ruling is a victory for American consumers, businesses, and the Constitution.
“We’re glad the Supreme Court affirmed today what we’ve been saying all along: Donald Trump’s tariffs are unconstitutional, and a massive overreach of executive power,” said Colin Mortimer, Director of CNL. “Overturning IEEPA is the first step in offering relief to Americans who have borne the burden of Donald Trump’s tariffs over the last 13 months. But more work is to be done.”
“Moving forward, Congress must act to ensure that no president can ever abuse executive powers to unilaterally raise taxes on the American people. The Constitution has always been clear: the power to enact tariffs belongs to Congress, not the president. Congress must reclaim its constitutional power.”
Since February 2025, the IEEPA tariffs have cost American businesses and consumers hundreds of billions of dollars in additional taxes, disrupted supply chains, and devastated the United States’ relationships with our closest allies.
“From the moment Donald Trump took office last year, CNL and our chapters around the country and across the world got to work to oppose Donald Trump’s tariff agenda,” explained Tobin Stone, Deputy Director of CNL. “On Inauguration Day, we launched TrumpsTariffsAreTaxes.org to educate Americans about the true cost of these policies, and we’ve used our Congressional Tariff Messaging Index and Senate Tariff & Trade Response Index to pressure Congress to hold Trump accountable.”
“Today’s ruling is a victory for everyone who refused to accept that taxing American families was somehow good economic policy — but it won’t be an end to our advocacy. CNL and our chapters will continue to advocate for real reforms that will protect consumers and businesses, and for trade policies that benefit everyone.”
