Center for New Liberalism Statement in Support of Bipartisan Fiscal Commission Proposals
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Center for New Liberalism Director Colin Mortimer released the following statement in support of the recently introduced bipartisan proposals to establish a fiscal commission:
“Our failure to get our debt and deficit under control stands to leave the next generation of Americans worse off. The interest we are paying on our growing debt threatens to crowd out critical public investments in infrastructure, education, and scientific research, while Social Security and Medicare are facing automatic cuts in the next decade if we fail to make both programs solvent.
A bipartisan fiscal commission that can explore every avenue to addressing our national debt, including raising revenues and cutting excessive spending, would hold both Democrats and Republicans to account and help restore trust in our government. The Center for New Liberalism is proud to support the fiscal commission proposals introduced by Senators Joe Manchin and Mitt Romney in the Senate, and Representatives Scott Peters and Bill Huizinga in the House. We urge all Democrats in Congress to support them as well.”
